Hall of Fame: Foundations

Here is a rundown of some of my most loved, most repurchased liquid foundations.  I try to avoid full coverage and powder foundations as I have aging, dry skin.  I’m wary of formulations that cake or settle into fine lines.

My all-time favorite foundation is VITALUMIÈRE AQUA by CHANEL.  I’ve lost count the number I’ve gone through.  When I need an absolutely flawless skin, this is my go-to.  It’s a light to medium coverage foundation with a dewy, satin finish.  I use the lightest shade: Beige.  Available at Chanel counters.

Another dewy, luminous formulation (you’ll notice a trend) is Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation.  Created by a Japanese actress in the 1980’s, Koh Gen Do uses plant-based ingredients, jojoba oil, olive squalane and shea butter.  My skin always looks bright and hydrated when using this foundation.  I use color 012 for my pale skin. Available online.

Laura Mercier Candleglow Soft Luminous Foundation really does give a “lit from within” appearance.  I use the shade, Shell.  It’s medium coverage.  Available at Laura Mercier counters.

MAC Face & Body.  An old, always reliable choice.  This is a light to buildable medium coverage foundation that is non-drying and leaves a satin finish.  So good!  I’m shade N1.  Available at MAC.

When I travel, I often take Candleglow and Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum Foundation, a longtime favorite since 2013.  I use a Beauty Blender to apply liquid foundations most of the time but the gel formulation of Healthy Mix makes it easily blendable with fingers and that’s nice when I need a quick application.  Widely available in Canada and the UK, I also buy from ASOS.  I’m shade 51 Vanille Clair.

The most expensive foundation I’ve ever used is By Terry’s Terrybly Densiliss Serum Foundation.  I loved every last drop.  It’s chocked full of anti-aging, skincare ingredients and has a lovely medium coverage finish.  I just don’t think it’s worth the price considering the number of quality foundations available at a lower price point.  Available at department stores.

Another light coverage, luminous finish foundation is L’Oreal True Match Lumi Cushion Foundation.  My dry skin loves this.  I use the shade N2.  My only complaint is how little product you get, .5 fluid ounces compared to the standard 1.0 fluid ounce in most bottles.  Available at drugstores everywhere.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Ultra HD is a medium coverage foundation and this formulation is about as full coverage as I go.  It leaves a very subtle satin finish and comes in a wide range of shades.  This is my third bottle.  I bought the shade 110 – Pink Porcelain which is a touch too pink for me but it works.

Maybelline Fit Me Dewy & Smooth Foundation is another great drugstore formula and a super bargain at $7.99.  I use the shade 110 Porcelain.

L'Oreal Infallible
L’Oreal Infallible Pro-Matte
is another drugstore foundation that I would buy again.
