Shopping My Vintage Wardrobe for AW19 Trends: Bad Romance Leather & Lace

vintage black lace top + faux leather trousers from + vintage pearls

Proof that all fashion trends come back around, I dug into my own vintage wardrobe to put together some looks inspired by the Autumn/Winter 2019 runway shows. I adore some of the themes this year such as 1970s Bourgeois with all the check patterns and argyle prints. The Bad Romance theme which Vogue describes as “beauty with a bite.” It combines leather and lace, dark florals, animal prints, and shades of purple. There was a lot of suiting on the runway as well as quilted clothing, smoking jackets, essentially bedclothes masquerading as day clothes. Also on the runway, was a parade of long coats and capes of which their vintage sisters are staples in my own fall and winter wardrobe.

I’m going to break up these looks into a few different posts over the next couple of weeks. Some of these trends are quite inspiring and I’ve come up with several newly improvised outfits that are now in my repertoire. I’ll begin with some leather and lace.

I have quite a bit of lace in my wardrobe, only a couple of leather items. I paired these leather cropped trousers with a vintage satin and lace top from Tova’s Vintage. I love easy styling. This look was a breeze to put together and I’ll definitely wear it again.

There are loads of vintage pearl necklaces such as these in thrift shops without the Gucci price tag. I’ve had these for years.

vintage black lace slip + vintage sweater + Zara platforms

I bought this vintage black lace slip at Brimfield this past September. I’m wearing it over tights and a Spanx slip because it is otherwise sheer on the bottom half. I’ve paired it with a vintage sweater and Zara platform boots.

I also like it with a jacket such as this vintage velvet 3/4 length coat.

Tights were all over the AW19 runway in black, and many colors and patterns. I’ve always loved tight with sandals so I’m all over this trend being back in season. H&M makes great affordable tights worn here with vintage lace trousers and Coach sandals that I’ve had for about seven years.

vintage lace trousers + H&M tights + Coach sandals

I just bought this vintage lace top from Raleigh Vintage last month and hadn’t worn it yet so I was excited when I saw something similar on the Gucci runway. I’ve styled it over a dark gray layering piece and a black skirt.

vintage lace blouse + black skirt + rhinestone ankle boots

I was thrilled to see studded boots on the Balmain runway because they remind me of the rhinestone boots I bought off the sale rack earlier this year. I wear them constantly.

vintage lace dress + blue-gray layering top – black jeans

More lace! I love the gray-blue color of this vintage lace dress from Gossamer Vintage in LA and it looks more expensive and of better quality than what I saw on the Prada runway. I bought two lace dresses from Gossamer. The other is cream and I style them by throwing them over a basic top and jeans.

Don’t be discouraged by designer prices, rather I hope you will be encouraged to replicate runway looks of your own by browsing vintage and thrift shops.
