Makeup Favorites: January 2019

2019 is the year of my low-buy as I focus on using up products that I own before I buy new ones. My current makeup routine here includes a few things I purchased last year as well as some old favorites that I need to use up before they expire.

e.l.f Beauty Shield Primer + SPF – I didn’t care for this primer at first but then I learned to use it sparingly just in my t-zone. Its mousse-like texture helps to conceal pores and the SPF 50 is a big bonus. It’s tinted but doesn’t cover much. I still use foundation over it. Available at drugstores.

The Ordinary Serum Foundation – A very lightweight, liquidy, light coverage foundation that looks best on good skin days. My shade is Very Fair. I don’t like the finish of this foundation when applied with a brush. For me, it works best when applied with a sponge. Available from The Ordinary. Update: I could not make this work. I hated the patchy finish. I had to toss it.

– A longtime favorite. I use it to prep my skin if it feels dry before applying makeup. I use it to set my makeup and remove any over-powdered cakiness, and I use it throughout the day to refresh. I love the smell and hydration. Availalbe at MAC.

Smashbox Contour Palette – This is a fantastic three in one palette containing a cool toned contour, bronzer, and highlighter. It comes with a brush but I use a different one. I love the all matte formulation and they blend like a dream. Available at Smashbox.

Sonia Kashuk Blush Brush – I’ve had this brush for years and like to use it specifically for powder contour. I use a different brush for cream contour products. Similar here.

Burt’s Bees Blush in Shy Pink – A very pretty petal pink. These blushes are buttery soft and large enough to last a couple of years. Available at drugstores.

BECCA Anti-Fatigue Under Eye Primer – A balm primer that helps conceal fine lines under concealer. It does nothing for puffiness as advertised but I like it as a primer. I bought this in the Sephora sale. I wouldn’t pay full price. Available at Sephora.

Tarte CC Under Eye Corrector in Light-Medium – The peachy tint covers dark circles in the inner corner of the eye and brightens. A favorite. Available at Tarte counters.

Milani Eyeshadow Primer in Nude – A bargain eye shadow primer for $6.99 that works. Available at drugstores.

HUDA BEAUTY Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette Mauve – I am actually obsessed with this little number. I traveled a lot in November and December and took this with me everywhere. Love the texture and pigment of the shadows. One of my most valued purchases. Available at Sephora.

Kat Von D Saint & Sinner Palette – This palette is a challenge and one I enjoy. I never travel with it due to its size but I have been keeping it close by in my makeup drawer to test my knowledge of color theory. I’m making it a priority to hit pan on this palette. It was limited edition and no longer available.

Urban Decay 24/7 Eye Pencil in Zero – A creamy jet black eyeliner. I have two pencils I’m working on using up. Available at Ulta.

Maybelline Lasting Drama Matte Eyeliner in Rusty Terracotta – I’ve been loving this brick red eyeliner when used with the red-toned Huda Beauty palette. Available at drugstores.

NYX Wonder Pencil – In my waterline, I’ve been using this nude pencil. Available at drugstores.

SWISS O-PAR Brow Dye – I use this kit to dye my brows. The whole process takes less than five minutes. Available online.

e.l.f. Brow Pencil – One of my favorite discoveries of 2018 is this $2.00 brow pencil. Available at drugstores.

Maybelline Brow Drama in Soft Brown – This is the one with the funky ball at the end of the wand. I don’t quite understand the design but it’s a great brow mascara. Available at drugstores.

L’ORÉAL Voluminous X Fiber Mascara – One end is a black primer and the other is a fiber mascara. It’s not as good as Lash Princess but it gives my lashes length. Update: This mascara is shit. Does nothing for your lashes.

MAC Lipstick in Whirl – A gorgeous pinky-brown matte nude. Available at MAC.

Sara Happ Plump & Prime – This does both, plumps and primes the lips for lipstick. I bought mine at Nordstrom but they no longer have it online. Available at Sara Happ.

Revlon Just Bitten Lip Balm in Adore – Between a balm and a stain. I love the dark red yet sheer finish. Available at drugstores.
