Makeup Favorites – July 2020
Some of my favorites in my current summer makeup routine include a buttery bronzer, a new mascara, and BB cream for glowing skin plus sun protection.
It’s hot and we’re stuck at home but I do try to make an effort a couple of times a week. In the summer heat, I’m loathed to put on foundation so I reach for BB creams or tinted sunscreens with built-in SPF. No-fuss, neutral eye looks are the norm because the sweltering heat saps my creativity. This is my basic (not basic) makeup that I wear mostly to the grocery store.
Summer Makeup Favorites
Skin79 Gold BB Cream SPF 30 PA++ – In hot weather, I prefer tinted sunscreen or BB cream over foundation. I like that I can get coverage plus protection in one product that also imparts a subtle glow. This K-Beauty BB cream is full coverage so I only use a small pump over my entire face and sheer it out. For light to medium skin tones. Available online for $23. It will last for months.
Sensai Click Pen Concealer – I’m still working my way through this click pen concealer similar to YSL’s Touché Éclat. I love these creamy brightening concealers for the under-eye.
Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer – I can’t be bothered with blush in this heat so I’ve been applying bronzer on my cheeks followed by a bit of highlighter. I love Butter Bronzer for its smooth texture and subtle glow. $16 at Ulta and it lasts for months.
Watt’s Up! Cream-to-Powder Highlighter – I like the texture and payoff of this light-gold highlighter by Benefit. Available at Sephora.
Real Techniques Setting Brush – I use this small setting brush to apply highlighter. $8 at Ulta. It’s a quality brush for a low price. I’ve had mine for years.
Milani Eyeshadow Primer – It’s better than most high-end primers. Sets eye shadow beautifully and my makeup lasts all day. $7 at drugstores.
e.l.f. Bite-Size Eyeshadow Palette in Truffles – These small palettes by e.l.f. are fantastic. I’ve been using the neutral one for a quick and easy eye application. I smoke out a little black on the lash line and don’t need eyeliner. $3 for a complete eye look is quite the bargain.
Vivienne Sabó Classic French Mascara Cabaret Premiere – My sister bought me this mascara as a gift and it’s awesome. It defines, separates, and lengthens lashes with its spindly brush. $11 online. Quality mascara for a great price.
Mascara Pro Tip
Generally speaking, the type of mascara wand dictates the intended result. “Big, full, false lash” effect mascaras will come with a fat, bushy wand. Mascaras intended to “lengthen and separate” will most likely have a spindly wand (often plastic) that gets in between lashes to coat each one.
Arches & Halos Brow Pomade in Neutral Brown – I discovered this brand recently at Target. What I love about this pomade aside from the texture is its ash-neutral color that is void of any red tones. Many brow products for brown hair have too much warmth in them for my taste. This shade is perfection. $10 at Target.
Benefit Angled Eyebrow Brush & Spoolie – This was a good investment. Perfect for applying brow pomade and brushing it through the brows. $20 at Ulta.
Urban Decay Lipstick in Anarchy – Having to wear a mask everywhere has cut down on my normal use of lipstick but occasionally (or just around the house) I’ve been enjoying this hot pink shade from Urban Decay. It’s easy to apply and has a smooth satin finish. I like the way it looks when the rest of my makeup is completely neutral-brown. $19 at Sephora.
INGLOT Brush 11S – This small makeup brush has multiple uses. I use it to smooth out my lip line. $20 at INGLOT.
Blow Pop Lip Balm – Most days, I just wear a lip balm and this Blow Pop flavor takes me back to my childhood. $1 at Target.
Let me know in the comments below if you’ve discovered any new makeup recently.
